Pot Lid:   PRINCE EDWARD

Description:  A very rare and appealing 'Cherry Tooth Paste' pot lid featuring a detailed portrait pictorial of Queen Victoria's eldest son the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII). Great quality print. Rarely seen for sale

Condition (please see detailed photo's):    Good  Has various fine hairlines/glaze-lines (mostly on the reverse and sides and only limited to the edge on the face), a little light subtle stain (on face and rear), a small (2mm x 3mm) fleabite flake on the back rim (and an even smaller fleabite also on the back rim) and some glaze wear/rubs in parts of the outer rim. Little to really detract on display though (nb the small spot on the bottom of the 'Y' of the word 'Cherry' looks to be in-manufacture)

Pot Lid:   'THOS MATTHEWS, ROSS'

Description:  A scarce larger (3.25") 'Areca Nut Tooth Paste' variant of this popular lid from this Herefordshire market town that features 'John Kyrle, the Man of Ross' in the centre. Fancy floral border. Exceptional print quality and attractive layout. 

John Kyrle (1637-1724) was a philathropist in Ross-On-Wye and from his early twenties adopted a frugal lifestyle and instead of utilising his wealth for himself, he sought to invest in the greater good of his locality and community that lived there. He lived mainly outdoors and died at the ripe old age of 84

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Good  Just has a small (4mm x 6mm) flake/chip on the border edge of the face (that has been repaired and painted over), a small (4mm x 8mm) chip on the back rim and various fine hairlines on a section of the back rim, only one of which is visible from the side view and only creeps into the face by around 8mm (at around 5 o'clock on the face edge, which as can be seen in the photos is difficult to spot) and is otherwise excellent

Pot Lid:   'FREDK WHEELER, GUILDFORD'

Description:  A very rare and sought after larger (3.5") pot lid variant from this historic town in Surrey featuring a fabulous and incredibly detailed pictorial of the famous protruding clock outside the town hall* in Guildford's high street. Exceptional quality print. Fancy border with wider outside area. An opportunity not be missed!

*The old town hall (or Guildhall as it is now better known) was initially used as a courtroom and built c1550. The projecting clock, erected at that time, was presented to the council by London clockmaker John Aylward in return for being allowed to trade in the borough. 

Frederick Wheeler took over the business from his mother in the 1870's and continued trading from the 129 High Street address

Condition (please see detailed photo's):    Very good/Excellent  Generally very good indeed with just a couple of totally insignificant tiny (<2mm) very light glaze rubs on the outer edge (barely worth mentioning) and an even smaller (<1mm) pinprick glaze-rub under the 'G' of Guildford which is barely noticeable) but nothing at all untoward and is otherwise excellent with just usual very light crazing that in no way detracts (and is lighter that photos may suggest)

Pot Lid:    GENUINE RUSSIAN BEARS GREASE

Description:  An appealing bears grease lid featuring a single dark bear looking quite fierce in its natural environment with a couple of trees and a mountain in the background. Excellent quality print. Beaded border. Has part of original paper label on rear (in green print and just the very top part of any lettering). Rarely seen in such great original condition

Description:  This lid features a great pictorial of the fabulous twin-spired Cologne Cathedral (although only one spire is evident on the lid). An impressive and popular lid.

Gilbertson's was taken over by 'Ayrton & Saunders' of Liverpool in 1904

Description:  A quite amusing small pictorial lid featuring a very proud looking man with a particularly pronounced moustache, monocle and pill box hat exclaiming "I USED IT". Decent quality print for one of these and not so often seen in such great condition.

Pot Lid:   'H.C. BAILDON & SON, EDINBURGH'

Description:  A large and fabulous 'Fragrant Cherry Tooth Paste' pot lid from this Scottish capital featuring a great pictorial of Scott's Monument in the centre. Superb very detailed print. Most of original gold band still intact. Guaranteed original (from a top pot lid collection). Rarely seen in such great condition.

The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott and is the second largest monument to a writer in the world. It stands in Princes Street Gardens (not far from Baildon's premises in Princes Street)

Condition (please see detailed photos):  Very good/Excellent   Superb overall condition with just the odd subtle fine rust glaze crazing on the back and face (barely visible and hardly worth mentioning), a tiny in-manufacture fleabite on the back edge (which is partly glazed over) and the odd tiny marks in the glaze (nb the marks on the back rim are just in-manufacture stilt marks from the kiln)

Description:  A scarce smaller sized (3.5") early B&W American pictorial pot lid with classic image of man shaving in front of mirror in centre. Double-line border. Excellent print quality.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Fair/Good   Has a medium (6mm x 7mm) old chip on the back rim edge, a smaller (4mm x 9mm) shallow chip on the very back rim (with a couple of shallow 5mm flakes too) and some dark old fleabites etc (mainly on the back rim edge) and is otherwise very good with just the odd dark glaze-rub on the edge (nb the two small indentations on the rim edge are fully glazed over and hence in-manufacture)

Description:  An appealing small (2.5") bears grease lid from this well documented London retailer featuring a single chained bear looking rather sorry for itself. Excellent quality print. Wide fancy border. See lot #19 for larger variant

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Fair/Good   Just has had a long thin (2mm x 10mm) sliver/chip off the underside of the outer rim that has been filled at some time (and slightly yellowed over time) which isn't seen from the face view and some spots of brown stain on the underside together with several glaze-flakes also on the underside (and a pinprick on the face, above the 'Y' of Patey) and is otherwise very good with just some subtle glaze-crazing in places

Description:  An unusual overglazed French pictorial pot lid (text translated from French as 'true bears grease from the north') featuring a lovely very dark single bear in its natural habitat with pine trees and foliage. Exceptionally dark print (but you can still make out the bear's teeth and claws and various grasses in the foreground). Fancy leafy border pcked out in green
