Pot Lid:   'X. BAZIN, PHILADEPHIA'

Description:  An appealing 'Beef Marrow Pomatum' pot lid from this large city in Pennsylvania featuring an attractive detailed pictorial of a standing bull. This being the variant with mention of "Succ'or to E. Roussel". Decent print quality. Decorative leafy border. Not often seen for sale

Description:  A rare 'Our Special Shaving Cream' lid featuring a fabulous shaving brush pictorial trade mark and with directions below. Very appealing overall design. Superb quality print. A very underrated lid

Pot Lid:     'ALEXANDRA PLATE POLISHING POWDER'

Description:  An exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire the only recorded example of this quite spectacular 'polishing powder' lid (there is a mauve version recorded in the pot lid book (p150) but not this highly impressive black print variant). Superb quality print. Highly detailed design featuring Princess Alexandra in a truly classical pose. Comes with original base

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  LID: Fair  Has had a large section on the left side come away at some point in the past and subsequently re-glued to a very good standard indeed (with just minimal filler etc). This of course could be re-touched if so desired but still looks geat on display and otherwise apart from a smallish (4mm x 9mm) chip on the inside of the back rim (so 99% hidden from side view) and several nibbles/fleabites also on the back rim, is otherwise very good indeed with just a few very light superficial scratches on the face that only show at certain angles and are hardly worth mentioning / BASE: Very good Just has a medium (8mm x 25mm) chip off the inside of the upper rim that is completely hidden when lid on top and is otherwise excellent

Pot Lid:   'DANIEL MELIA'

Description:  A classic lid featuring an attractive girl with long wavy hair and an alluring smile (no doubt attributable to using this brand of toothpaste). Excellent quality print (with just the odd minor smudge). Scarce

Daniel Melia built a chain of successful grocery outlets in a number towns in the north-west and midlands. This is why this tooth paste pot lid does not feature any locations as it was possible to sell it from all the company’s outlets

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Good   Has had a smallish (5mm x 10mm approx) chip on the outside edge of the rim at around 2 o'clock that has been professionally repaired (to an exceptionally high standard and could so very easily be missed). Upon close inspection with a strong magnifying glass under a bright light you can only just make it out beyond the border, but nigh on impossible to see with the naked eye) and is otherwise excellent with just two small spots of minor rust stain on the very back rim

Description:   An appealing medium sized 'Pure Cold Cream of Roses' pot lid from this London retailer featuring a large picture of their shop front in Wigmore Street, West London. Great print quality (with just some in-manufacture glaze miss on the front). Elaborate overall design. 

Era:  c1912+ (from when this partnership was registered as a Ltd Co)

Condition (please see detailed photo's):   Good/Very good  Just a tiny flake/fleabite on the very back of the rim (that looks like it is in-manufacture anyway as it partly glazed over), the in-manufacture glaze-miss as mentioned above, some light wear on parts the outside edge and a very subtle hairline bruise on the back rim

Description:  An appealing and rare early domed bears grease pot lid featuring a rather sad looking standing bear in its natural environment with three fir trees in the background. Excellent quality print. Single line border.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Repaired   Has had restoration to a decent standard on parts of the rear flange (in fact it's difficult to spot at first until you see some areas without the original glaze-crazing). The face itself is completely untouched

Description:  An impressive slightly larger (3.33") example of this lid featuring a mosque and palm trees from this well known London company. More unusual 'thistle, rose & clover' trade mark below right of main picture (as opposed to more familiar arm and globe). Decent quality print. Appealing overall design. 

Era:  c1880-90's

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Fair  Had a medium chip on the back rim which has been repaired to a high standard and is otherwise excellent with the face not affected at all and just the odd patch of subtle greyness (mainly on parts of the side rim)

Pot Lid:   'PROCKTER, PENZANCE'

Description:  A simply superb very early and quite substantial (4.5") 'Vegetable Hair Cream' lid from this famous mining town in West Cornwall which features the Royal Coat of Arms on the front (flanked by the usual lion and unicorn and surmounted by an early queen Victoria's crown above). Exquisite quality print. Slightly domed with a deep recess just inside the outer edge and with a marbled border beyond. Believed one of just three recorded examples, both others with damage. Another one not to miss!

Provenance:  This exact lid was originally found in a back garden in Chapel Street, Penzance and taken into Sanders antique shop just up the road where it was spotted by a Surrey collector whilst on holiday and later sold to me when I had a shop in nearby Marazion in 1998. I then later regretted selling it when I sold the shop a couple of years afterwards

Description:  An appealing larger (2.5") 'vegetable skin ointment' lid featuring a man's head pictorial. Excellent quality print (with just an outer border smudge). Carries the 'Oxford St' London address. Appealing overall design.

Condition (please see detailed photos):    Very good  Great overall condition with just a tiny (1-2mm) fleabite flake on the back rim edge, the odd glaze rub also only on the back rim edge (one on the inside) and some very light and minor stain in parts of the back rim (plus some on the side wall that just creeps up onto the edge of the face at 8 o'clock, but nothing untoward) and is otherwise excellent

Pot Lid:    'WRIGHT'S'

Description:  This large (4.25") and imposing lid really is a work of art with great use of contrasting dark and light shading to accentuate the effect. The image so evocative of the Victorian era with a man shaving in the mirror (and the shaving pot on the table having the 'WRIGHT'S name on it). Excellent print quality.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Fair/Good  Has a medium/large (6mm x 15mm) chip on the inside of the back rim (so is 95% hidden from side view and not seen on display at all), a smaller (5mm x 13mm) chip on the outer rim (just visible at 7 o'clock on the face), a couple of small (4mm-6mm) shallow flakes on the back rim, some wear on just over half of the outer edge of the outer rim and some overall light stain/discolouration

Description:  A small (2.5") 'two bruins' bears grease pot lid featuring a standing black bear with another lying behind (with its tongue out). Particularly strong print for one of these. Fancy border (with some wrapped around the outer rim). Scarce in this smaller size and not so often seen in mint condition

Pot Lid:   'H.P. & W.C. TAYLOR, PHILADELPHIA'

Description:   A classic pictorial pot lid from this famous Philadelphia perfumer depicting George Washington crossing the Delaware River on horseback on December 26th 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. Single line border. Excellent quality print and unusually well detailed. Scarce.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):   Fair/Good  Just has a small (9mm) horseshoe-shaped hairline bruise on the side rim at about 1 o'clock which also goes into the face edge up to the letter 'Y' of Taylor, a diagonal hairline on the side wall that tails out on the face edge by about 5mm (which as can be seen in the photos doesn't show too much at all on display), a small/medium (6mm x 9mm)  chip on the back rim edge and apart from some subtle stain/crazing (mainly on the underside) and the odd glaze-rub on the back rim edge (barely visible and hardly worth mentioning) is otherwise very good
