Description:  An appealing pink print 'Rose Vegetable Tooth Paste' pot lid from this large city in Pennsylvania. Very appealing large decorative border. Scarce

Description:  One of several appealing coloured monochrome lids in this sale, this time a lovely example of a Sharp's lid variation in sepia print and featuring a mosque and palm trees etc. Eye catching design. Good print for one of these and not so often seen in such great condition

Pot Lid:   'J.S. FRY & SONS, BRISTOL''

Description:  A once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire this quite outstanding and immensely impressive large coloured pot lid made by the world renowned Pratt company in Staffordshire and advertising Fry's 'Superior Chocolate Paste'. Exquisitely detailed pictorial of an early galleon at anchor in Napirima Bay in Trinidad (with San Fernando Hill in the background and the cocoa bean settlement of San Fernando just below). Superb vibrant colours. Exceptional quality print (far more crisp and detailed than the photos would suggest, if you'd like us to send you high definition images don't hesitate to ask). Has usual Staffordshire alignment dots at 3 and 9 o'clock. Outstanding lid in every way, and you may never see one for sale again as they are extremely rare, avidly chased and often referred to as the ultimate coloured lid. Don't miss it!

Description:  A very attractive blue print pot lid from this West Sussex proprietor (see below) featuring a detailed horse's head near the top, a pair of horse's legs below and you can just make out a couple of small animal heads in front and behind the word 'Celladema' in the centre. Fancy border. Decent quality print. Carries the magic 'cure' word. Scarce

Pot Lid:   'J. GROSSMITH, LONDON'

Description:  A particularly early and exceptionally rare coloured pot lid from this famous London perfumer believed manufactured by Ridgway in Cauldon in Staffordshire (see below). Two distinctive tiny circles at 3 and 9 o'clock being on the face edge, beyond the double line border. Superb detailed print of Jenny Lind (a very famous singer of the period born in Stockholm) within a very detailed garland of flowers. Another very rare opportunity

Era:  c1838+ (from when they were at the Newgate Street address)

Diameter:    78mm

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Good  Has an ultra-fine hairline on the side wall that only just creeps onto the face (by around 12mm and between 3 and 4 o'clock and which is just visible on the back too) plus has a small 2-3mm fleabite flake on the back rim where the hairline passes through. There's a historic smallish (3mm x 9mm) chip off the back rim (mostly on the inside and not seen on display) and a smaller insignificant ultra-fine hairline that looks to be in manufacture as the tiny flake on it is fully glazed over (this is nigh on impossible to spot to the naked eye) and a couple of historic fleabite flakes on the inside of the back rim (barely worth mentioning) and is otherwise excellent with just the odd area of subtle crazing and light wear but nothing at all untoward

Pot Lid:   'J.S. HIGGINS, KENSINGTON, LONDON'

Description:  Another early and rare coloured pot lid, this  time a 'Celebrated Bandoline Pomade' from this Kensington perfumer and manufactured by the pratt factory in Staffordshire. Usual tiny circles at 3 and 9 o'clock on the face edge (although the latter being quite indistinct). Superbly detailed coloured flowers around border, all underglaze. 3 unusual very small blue printed markings on underside. Very appealing design. Another very rare opportunity!

Rated as 'RRRR' in Mortimer's coloured pot lid book (page 169)

Description:  A very appealing early blue print bears grease lid featuring a standing bear from this famous chemist in Lombard Street, London. The double line border variant (with beading within). Decent print. (see lot #13 for London & Paris variant)

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Very good   Just has a small (2mm x 15mm) old hairline bruise on the back rim/edge and some staining mainly on the underside and part of the side (likely from the actual bears grease itself) and a very subtle mark on the face which could also be a light stain

Description:  A fabulously attractive early red print 'Pomatum' pot lid from this well documeted perfumer in London. This being the scarce 'Montpelier House' variant. Bold crown pictorial below centre with 'VR' (Victoria Regina) initials either side. Plenty of scrolls and flourishes associated with early lids. Dark print. You'll struggle to find a better all round example!

Pot Lid:   'THORNE, LAMBETH'

Description:  An extraordinarily rare 'Inimitable Potted Bloater Anchovy & Preserved Meats' large multicoloured pot lid from this retailer in Lambeth, London and featuring the Royal Coat of Arms in full colour below the three flags of the allied armies during the Crimean war. Has 4 distinctive tiny circles at 3 and 9 o'clock being on the face edge (either side of the outer border) indicating it was manaufactured in the Pratt factory in Staffordshire. Very attractive overall design. Yellow border. Excellent quality underglaze print. Another exceptionally rare offering!

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Very good  Just has three very small (2-3mm) historic flakes grouped closely together on the back rim (together with the odd totally insignificant pinhead fleabite, also on the back rim) and the odd tiny glaze-rub on the top rim edge (around 10-11 o'clock on the outer lined border) and a tiny (1mm) pinhole on the side wall (that doesn't go all the way through) and the odd minor stain, but nothing at all untoward and certainly nothing at all to detract when on display

Pot Lid:   'MILLER, NEPHEW & CO, MANCHESTER'

Description:  Another rare offering, this time a Manchester lid for 'Miller's Royal Alexandra Pomade' and featuring Princess Alexandra with the Prince of Wales (who later became Prince Edward VII). Has two distinctive tiny circles at 3 and 9 o'clock on the face edge (outside the gold band) indicating it was manufactured in the Pratt factory in Staffordshire. Fabulous overall design with the royal coat of arms above the Prince of Wales and two cherubs with a crown above Alexandra. Retains most of original thick gold band. Excellent quality underglaze print. Rarely seen for sale (if at all!)

Miller, Nephew & Co, 91 Picadilly, Manchester - listed in Slater's 1863 directory for Manchester. Likely produced to commemorate the wedding of Albert Edward and Princess Alexandra in the same year
