Pot Lid:   'HOOPER & CO, LONDON'

Description:  A totally outstanding pictorial ointment pot lid with a superb pictorial of a good samaritan leaving his horse to help out an injured man (please see below). Exquisite quality print. Fabulous overall design. Amongst the best of pictorial lids and one of possibly two undamaged examples in existence. Don't miss this one! 

The 'Good Samaritan' is a parable that features in the Gospel of Luke and refers to a traveller who is stripped of clothing, beaten and left half dead alongside the road. First a priest and then a Levite comes by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a samaritan happens upon the traveller and helps the injured man despite the hatred between jews and samaritans at the time.

Pot Lid:   'LORIMER & CO, LONDON & NEW YORK'

Description:  A great undamaged example of this ever popular 'Sanoline' pot lid featuring three ladies admiring what looks like a selection of dental products laid out on a table in front of them. Clever use of shading for great effect. Rarely seen without some sort of damage

Pot Lid:      'JACKMAN'S, BALHAM'

Description:   Another superbly impressive pictorial lid, this time from this district in south London. Great image of a horse's head with leather eye 'blinkers' (no doubt having used Jackman's own 'Diaphanous brown leather polish' on them). Excellent highly detailed print. Beaded border. Rare. You won't find a better example!

Description:  A very appealing bears grease lid from this well documented London retailer featuring a single chained bear looking rather sorry for itself. Excellent quality print. Fancy border

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Restored   Has had complete professional restoration to the rear to a very high standard with only a very small (2mm x 8mm) section of the outer edge on the face (at 6 o'clock) which has been slightly filled/retouched and is otherwise excellent on the face (it's nigh on impossible to tell how much has been repaired on the back due the high standard of restoration)

Pot Lid:   'KNOWLES' ESAULINE'

Description:  Another appealing pictorial lid, this time featuring a very proud looking moustached man with a monocle and pill box hat exclaiming 'I USED IT'. Exceptional quality print. Rarer in this larger size with geometric border.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Restored   Just presumably two chips/chunks on the side that have been restored to such a high standard that it could easily be passed as mint, however if you look under a magnifying glass you can only just make out two areas that are devoid of the subtle clear glaze crazing that is evident in the rest of the side wall. The face is totally unaffected as is the underside and back rim. A repair to the very highest standard, that could very easily be overlooked

Pot Lid:   'R.B.EDE & CO, LONDON'

Description:  Another fabulous pictorial lid from London. This time with a superb depiction of a man shaving in period attire with a razor in right hand and an old oak washstand in the background. Double line border. Great use of detailed strong print and contrasts of shades to really make this stand out. Recently dug

Not to be confused with the almost identical American 'Wright's' lid, this is both rarer, smaller and a much more desirable English variant.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):   Very good/Excellent   Just a pretty insignificant small (4mm x 7mm) old shallow flake/chip on the very back rim edge (which is 99% hidden from side view and not at all on display) and apart from the odd few tiny superficial surface scratches and the odd area where the glaze is very slightly thinner and the odd mark in the glaze (all in manufacture and nothing to detract) is otherwise excellent

Pot Lid:   'PRICE & Co., LONDON'

Description:  An appealing and rare bears grease lid from this famous London chemist featuring a standing bear with a long sash in the centre (that extends out into the foreground) Great quality print. Very rarely seen for sale.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Restored   Has been in two halves and stuck together professionally (it's difficult to tell the extent of any further damage on the back due to the sheer quality of repair). There are a couple of very small areas on the very edge where some lacquer has flaked away revealing a white glaze below. It may well benefit therefore from being stripped of this slightly yellowed lacquer on the face?

Description:  An impressive larger (3.25") lid featuring a mosque and palm trees from this well known London company. More unusual 'thistle, rose & clover' trade mark below right of main picture (as opposed to more familiar arm and globe). Excellent quality print. Appealing overall design. Rarely seen without some sort of damage

Pot Lid:   CHERRY TOOTH PASTE

Description:  A fabulous blue/black print tooth paste pot lid featuring a superbly detailed bunch of cherries pictorial. Striking design. Retains original gold border. Slight recess around outer edge (like Gosnell lids). Rare and desirable.

Condition (please see detailed photo's):   Very good/Excellent   Superb condition with just a pretty insignificant very small (2-3mm) glaze rub/flake on the back rim edge and an old tiny (2mm) flake on the very back rim. Neither of course doing anything at all to detract when on display and apart froma  very light superficial surface scratch on the face (barely noticeable and hardly worth mentioning) is otherwise mint (nb the small dot on the face is just a tiny 'foreign body' in the glaze)

Pot Lid:   'DELICATELY SCENTED, RUSSIAN BEARS GREASE'

Description:  An appealing early bears grease lid featuring a dark standing bear carrying a sash. Scarce smaller 2.66" size. Detailed print. Always very popular due to the sheer size of the bear (and the fact that it possibly bears more of a resemblance to a tail-less rat than a bear)

Condition (please see detailed photo's):  Fair/Good   Just has 4-5 small chips (the largest being just 3mm x 9mm) and a couple of minor small flakes on the back of the rim and apart from three tiny pinhead glaze flakes on the face (mainly on the bear's back) and is otherwise very good (the glaze is totally stable, the pinhead flakes could even be caused by tiny bubbles in the glaze)
